Boss RC-50 – Release Date: 2006
Probably the least known Loop station in their lineup, The Boss RC-50 was a seriously cool Loop Station in its day, and it could be said that it should have been Boss’s flagship model, long before the RC-300 claimed that crown. Though the RC-50 had already been on the market for several years by the time the RC-300 appeared, it never really took it’s place as the best Boss Loop Station of the later 2000’s. This likely just a result of the RC-20XL being so prevalent across the board. Perhaps the RC-50 was just a little too expensive for most looping musicians to jump into, or perhaps having access to 3 stereo tracks was too big a leap for most. The workflow was very different from other loop stations, and might have felt more like a Boomerang-style logic to some.
On this machine, you would first select one of the tracks, then pressing the Record button would start things off. The next press of the record button would start playback. Pressing the same switch again will overdub a layer over the first track. Undo/Redo is available on a separate foot switch. There is also a separate Stop/Clear foot switch. So, there are no ‘Press & Hold’ or ‘Double Tap’ functions, which really simplifies the entire process for most musicians.
